It is almost a week on from the announcement that staff lay-offs were coming to Guild Wars 2 publisher, ArenaNet. As I begin to look back on the fall out of a pretty catastrophic wipe, Thursday morning is creeping up on me, and it seems like an appropriate time to sit and take stock of everything that has happened. advertisement While Steve already encapsulated our initial reaction to the unfolding story, things have moved on and it bears returning to this arena for one last look at what it means for ArenaNet, how it will impact Guild Wars 2, and why this particular set of lay-offs is different from the other corporate cost-cutting that seems to be cutting a swathe through the gaming industry. Not long after NCSoft CEO Songyee Yoon advised ArenaNet employees that“Our live game business revenue is declining as our franchises age, delays in development on PC and mobile have created further drains against our revenue projects, “News started to trickle out about … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2: More Than Just a Damage Number

GET GOOD OR GET GATHERINGGuild Wars 2 has been around for an age now. Not only is it a mature MMORPG but it’s still growing. After more than six years, I can still remember finding ArenaNet’s approach to gathering mind-blowing. Like world events and mob tagging, the gathering system in Guild Wars 2 dragged us out of the dark ages. Traditional gathering systems had too often left players fighting over resources that were decidedly finite. A recent letter by Bungie on their official site reveals that the team has retaken full publication rights to Destiny from Activision. Currently there is no date set for the severance but Bungie has indicated that the process will be completed seamlessly. When we first launched our partnership with Activision in 2010, the gaming industry was in a pretty different place. As an independent studio setting out to build a brand new experience, we wanted a partner willing to take a big leap of faith with us. We had a vision for Destiny that we believed in, but to launch a game of that magnitude, we needed the support of an established publishing partner. With Activision, we created something special. To date, Destiny has delivered a combination of over 50 million games and expansions to players all around the world. More importantly, we’ve also witnessed a remarkable community – tens of millions of Guardians strong – rise up and embrace Destiny, to play together, to make … [Read more...] about Destiny 2: Bungie Takes Back Full Publication Rights

Also, for the story stuff later in this article I have stayed away from revealing any major story spoilers for this episode, so as long as you are caught up on the current season you should be safe from spoilers. advertisement Sun’s RefugeFor Sun’s Refuge ArenaNet has taken lessons from current home instances (which are located in the main city for your character’s race) and guild halls to meld these distinct systems into something which can grow with our characters. The base of the instance is similar to guild halls in that it’s pretty huge and sprawling and there are various upgrades which can be unlocked and will change how the instance looks the … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2: Episode 4 Preview
For the last few years, AdTech has been one of the most frequently discussed buzzwords in the digital media industry.
