Last week I stepped out of town for a couple of days, and you know how that usually goes — something in the industry implodes, destroys, is canned, or is fired. Except that this time, apparently the internet collectively went nuts watching a Bethesda Fallout livestream of nothing in particular for 24 hours, followed by the internet being treated to a trailer to a new title, Fallout 76. As I’ve stated several times before, one of my greatest gaming hopes is that we would be treated to a Fallout MMORPG. This series, its setting, and its retro-futuristic aesthetic clicks so hard with me, and a little Fallout 111 guy and Dogmeat sit on my desk at work. While the single-player RPGs are all well and good, I want that persistent universe, that multiplayer interaction, constant development, the whole enchilada. I don’t think we’re going to get the full MMO package in Fallout 76, but it sounds like we might get a lot more than what most had been anticipating. Scuttlebutt … [Read more...] about Fallout 76 gives me a radioactive hope

How do you pick one big story in a week like this? You don’t: You just roll with all the big ones. This week, we learned Bethsoft is working on a new Fallout game, Fallout 76, with a rumored online and/or MMO component, which set the internet on fire. ZeniMax then freaked its community out when players discovered spyware had been patched into Elder Scrolls Online; the studio apologized, saying it was added in error and will be removed this week, never having been activated or used. And then there was Bless Online, which soft launched into early access with server outages, downtime, dupes, and refunds from folks upset over the game’s lack of endgame content. Stay tuned for our own hands-on with the game’s first week, and then read on for the very best of this week’s MMO news and … [Read more...] about MMO Week in Review: Fallout 76, Bless Online, and Elder Scrolls Online
This past week’s announcement of Fallout 76 — Bethesda’s newest entry in the post-apocalyptic series — has just about everyone in the gaming community buzzing. And while we’re sure to hear more about this at E3, one vital piece of information may have already been leaked: the release date. When Amazon posted the game’s pre-order page, it initially listed the game as releasing by July 31st, 2018. That date has since been changed to “on or before December 31st, 2019,” but there are some that wonder if Amazon might know a thing or two that we don’t. After all, Bethesda has said that it wants to drastically shorten the time between game announcements and releases. Another theory is that the multiple Halloween references in the teaser video point to an October launch. Fallout 76 is retailing for $60, although you may want to wait until E3 (June 12th through 14th) to find out more (including a documentary on the making of the game!). We … [Read more...] about Amazon posts and retracts a July 2018 release date for Fallout 76
After what was nearly an interminable teaser stream, Bethsoft finally announced this morning that it’s working on Fallout 76, another entry in a beloved franchise and another chance to trot out retro-futurist Pip-Boy iconography. At first, I shrugged – it’s neat, and a lot of us will buy it, but seeing as how Fallout is traditionally a single-player sandbox RPG, it’s not something we’d normally cover. But then the rumors started flying. Kotaku floated the claim that it’s an “online game of some sort.” Polygon said it “heard the game will feature multiplayer.” The Twitterverse is chirping about battle royale. Nobody seems to know (or be allowed to say) for sure, and barring leaks, it’ll be another week and change until Bethsoft spills its post-apoc can o’ beans. So why not speculate? What type of multiplayer do you think Fallout 76 will have? Are you spotting any clues in the trailer? Place your bets – and … [Read more...] about Leaderboard: What type of multiplayer do you think Fallout 76 will have?
During this year's Bethesda E3 Showcase on June 10th (6:00 pm Pacific / 9:00 pm Eastern), a brand new Fallout game will be fully revealed. For now, we have a rather cryptic announcement trailer and a name: Fallout 76. The title refers to Vault 76, a "control" vault that has been said to house up to 500 inhabitants and that would only open 20 years after a nuclear apocalypse. 76 has been mentioned in both Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. In the video, you will also see the PiP Boy display with the date October 27, 2102 on it. Could this potentially be a release date for this year? Let's speculate! … [Read more...] about Bethesda Announces Fallout 76, the Newest Game in the Series
