If we judged MMOs by their numbers alone — and I’m not suggesting we do so — then the original Lineage would be the crowing rooster strutting about the hen house. It’s also been one of those games that I’ve always intellectually acknowledged was a huge hit for some reason but never gave much attention. I think it’s because, contrary to many western MMOs, Lineage is primarily an Asian phenomenon. That doesn’t mean it should be shunned, of course, but just that it may be difficult to understand when you’re on the outside of it. So let’s back up the memory truck to September 1998, when a then-fledgling NCsoft rolled out a Diablo-style isometric MMO and struck virtual gold in South Korea. At the time, gaming rooms were becoming a huge thing in the country. A recession had hit, giving people a lot of time with nothing to do, and the government was rapidly expanding the broadband network. In the face of this perfect storm, titles like … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: Lineage

Play EVE Online for freeJust a few days ago, we awoke to news so unexpected that it made me check I hadn’t time-traveled to April 1st: EVE Online developer CCP Games is being bought by Black Desert Online studio Pearl Abyss for a total of $425 million USD. The news immediately kicked the EVE Online community into a frenzy, with most people’s gut reactions being overwhelmingly negative. Black Desert is known for its aggressive monetisation strategies and many EVE Online players were understandably worried that Pearl Abyss would try to force the same strategy onto EVE. CCP Games and Pearl Abyss have obviously been very positive about the buyout, with both companies issuing statements about the exciting new opportunities they see in working together. CCP has also been pretty quick to get a handle on the community discussion surrounding the deal, answering some questions on twitter and holding a Q&A thread on the EVE forum Friday nightt. The player-elected Council … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: What could the sale of CCP Games mean for EVE Online?

Black Desert Online may have just killed its popular Shadow Arena battle royale, but there’s good news too because Pearl Abyss has revealed that the franchise has made over $1 Billion across all platforms. Pearl Abyss was founded in 2010 by Dae-il Kim, a well-known Korean game producer, with a small team of seven. A successful IPO in 2017 resulted in Kim becoming a new billionaire, but he still serves as Development Director, and the company has since grown to more than 700 employees based in South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and North America. Their new Manhattan Beach, CA office serves as a regional hub for game operations and marketing for the Western market and provides insight on market strategy and corporate development. Following Pearl Abyss’ acquisition of CCP Games in November 2018, the Icelandic developer has continued to operate its own titles as an independent entity with studios in Reykjavík, London and Shanghai. Capitalizing on their common focus on MMO game … [Read more...] about Pearl Abyss Announces $1 Billion In Gross Sales For Black Desert Franchise
