Trove launched last Thursday and a lot of people are curious whether this game is any good. I will try to give you an impression of the game, but will try to keep it short(ish). There is a quite simple reason for this: This is the 4th time that I’m writing down my impressions of Trove. The first time was in July 2014, when Trove was still in alpha. The second time was during closed beta in October 2014. The third time was during open beta in February 2015. You may also notice quite a lot of similarities between this post here and the one from February. I had tried to write a new impression piece, but found that so many things from the post in February still hold true that I decided to rework this blog post and bring it up-to-date instead of writing everything again. An additional note: An online game’s launch is usually accompanied by queue times etc. when a lot of people want to play the game at the same time. I will not write about this here, though, as I’m certain … [Read more...] about Post-launch Impressions: Is Trove a good game?

It’s time for another “Ask Nerdy Bookahs”. We have looked at the questions in the search terms that led people to our blog for which we know we do not have fitting entries and we’re trying to answer those questions now. This time, the topic is Trove. We have seen quite a lot of questions that led to this blog, but we have not answered them here yet. Or we have, but they are outdated. Trove has gone into open beta at the beginning of November and with it, the game saw quite a few changes again. How do I get cubits? Cubits are the game’s currency. The kind you get from playing the game, not the kind you have to buy with real money (those are called “credits”). You used to get cubits the first time you entered the game after creating your account. Since you could buy things in the store and trade them to others, Trion Worlds have pulled back on the amount of cubits you get without doing anything. You no longer get any cubits when you first log … [Read more...] about Ask Nerdy Bookahs: Questions about Trove
With the game’s officially launching this July 9, I thought it could be helpful to provide a few tips to get you started! Especially since you can already create an account and start playing right now if you want to! In general, Trove isn’t a very complicated game and the tutorial explains a lot already. But as with every new game, some things can be confusing or unclear in the beginning. My character as an undead First things first: You only have one character slot! Accordingly, you should choose your name wisely. This will be the name that others will know you by. But don’t worry about the different classes (there will be 11 different ones when the game launches). You can easily switch between those classes. Also, cosmetics can be changed for every class. Your Knight can be a white-skinned male with a mohawk and your Candy Barbarian can be a lady with ponytails – or an undead if you prefer that look. Not everybody is bothered by that, but I cannot create … [Read more...] about Getting started in Trove: A few helpful tips
Update (July 18, 2015): This post is outdated! Go here for a newer blog post. Trove is the first game that I have been following this closely since alpha. And so it’s probably not a big surprise that it did not only get a “First Impressions Review” (in alpha), but a Second Impressions Review (in closed beta) from me as well. But that’s not the end of they journey, of course. Trove went into open beta back in November and with that, everybody can create an account and start playing immediately now without having to pay anything. I also noticed that in the last few weeks, we have been getting a lot of hits on our “Second Impressions” piece, but that one doesn’t do the game any justice anymore. A lot has changed and in case you have read the Second Impressions review, you may be very pleased to hear that the issues I mentioned with rubberbanding, low FPS, lags etc. are (mostly) gone. Sometimes, especially after logging in for the first time, I … [Read more...] about Trove: Open Beta Impressions Review
