“It’s about time.” Those are not my words referring to the current development status of Camelot Unchained. No, those came directly from the mouth of Mark Jacobs, City State Entertainment CEO, when we sat down together at DragonCon 2018 to discuss the game, its progress, and its future. It’s about time means that the basis of the engine and tech is almost done. And with that foundation laid, the meaty game bits like abilities and classes are going to be following at a quicker pace. According to Jacobs, the team can see the light at the end of development tunnel. As we chatted, the conversation flowed from the current server stability to VR to battle royale to 64-bit client. Jacobs shared videos of large (and I do mean large)-scale battles, made me want an Oculus Rift even more, and even managed to pique my interest in the BR field. Add to that the DragonCon panel later that evening with Andrew Meggs, co -founder and code overlord, and Ben Pielstick, game … [Read more...] about DragonCon 2018: Camelot Unchained’s Mark Jacobs on VR, battle royale, and more

In their latest producer’s blog, Nexon have showcased Maple Story 2 Mushking Royale, their take on the Battle Royale game type currently dominating the online gaming market. To promote the new mode, during the 2nd Closed Beta Test Nexon will be giving away some of their recently revealed Founders packs to winners of the Mushking Royale matches. Unfortunately they do not specify how many packs will be up for grabs. To be in with a chance of winning a founders pack, you will need to make sure you’re online during the event times: “Mushking Royale will only be available for one weekend during Closed Beta 2, starting on July 20th at 8:00 AM PDT and running through July 23rd at 7:59 AM PDT. Paladins got not one but four announcements at this year’s Hi-Rez Expo. There’s a brand-new team death match mode coming as well as new battle cat mounts and a unique new champion. And then there was the biggest news revealing the upcoming Paladins: Battlegrounds. But announcements only gloss the surface of things, so I sat down with devs to discuss the new modes. Todd Harris, Hi-Rez COO and Paladins Producer, and Erez Goren, Founder and CEO, shared details and answered questions on Team Deathmatch and Paladins: Battlegrounds. I also got to settle in and play a few matches of Battlegrounds. Here’s what I learned in the interviews and my hands-on. More modes, more options While developing offshoots on different platforms is all well and good (see Paladins Strike), continuing to expand the offerings in the base game is what builds a player base and encourages attention. And of course Paladins wants to grow. Harris noted that Paladins is popular globally, even popular … [Read more...] about Hi-Rez Expo 2018: Hands-on with Paladins Battlegrounds, the game’s new battle royale mode
The free to play Vehicular shooter Crossout joined the battle royale bandwagon this week with the launch of patch 0.9.50. The game introduced its own 32 player battle royale mode called "Crossout Royale" which utilizes all the basic elements of battle royale that you'd expect. Players start off with a basic vehicle with a single light weapon and must scavenge the map to find new weapons, modules, parts, and more. It looks like H1Z1 isn't the only vehicle based battle royale game anymore either. FacebookTwitterReddit Related … [Read more...] about Vehicle Combat Game CrossOut Adds 32 Player Battle Royale
The Battle Royale genre turned from a niche game mod to industry leader in just one year. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, developed by Bluehole, blazed that trail and hit a peak of 3.2 million concurrent players earlier this year. But what turned Battle Royale into a genre rather than a single hit was how quickly Epic Games was able to spin out their own version: Fortnite Battle Royale. Despite being second out the gate, Fortnite has managed to surpass PUBG by hitting 3.4 million concurrent users earlier this month. Despite being free to play, Fortnite has rakes in over $80 million USD per month according to Superdata Research. That places both PUBG and Fortnite on the list of top 10 highest grossing PC games. The only genre that has more entries in the top 10 is the MMORPG itself. Other studios were quick to realize to potential in this new genre. Games like Paladins and Warframe quickly announced their own Battle Royale modes. These and other Battle Royale games like Darwin Project … [Read more...] about The Weekly Raid: Are Battle Royale Games A Fad?
