Play Star Trek Online for freeIt’s always nice when in-game events reference events that would matter a great deal to residents of that world even if they mean little in the real world. To the occupants of the galaxy in Star Trek Online, First Contact Day matters quite a bit, as it’s the day when humanity first encountered an alien race (the Vulcans, specifically). And now players can celebrate that event from April 5th through the 12th with a scavenger hunt through Bozeman, Montana! It’s not just any scavenger hunt, of course; players will be hunting for suitable parts to build a replica of the Phoenix, the first warp-capable ship flown by a human. Players launch their replica models and compete for the highest altitude, with participants earning holographic memorial vouchers that can be traded in for special engines or holo-emitters. If you’d like to celebrate an achievement that hasn’t actually happened yet, just make sure you’re level 10 by April … [Read more...] about Star Trek Online celebrates First Contact Day starting on April 5

Play Star Trek Online for freeThose of you longing to play a Tzenkethi captain in Star Trek Online will not have your wishes answered with the Season 14.5 update, but you will get a taste of it with the chance to see events from Neth Par’s point of view. The update lets players experience her look at what happened behind the scenes, revisiting familiar events from a new perspective to explain her decision to defect. That should be pretty interesting for anyone looking forward to the next big story update coming with the game’s approaching expansion. The patch also includes a revision to the game’s lockbox system as well as a new secondary specialization for players. Want to keep law and order? Then pick up the Constable secondary to emulate Odo and keep your space under control. (We can only hope that the specialization includes the ability to project disappointed huffs.) The update is live now on PC, but console players will have to wait just a little bit longer. … [Read more...] about Star Trek Online launches Season 14.5 behind the eyes of the Tzenkethi

Federation News Service, killing for a story. My experience with Star Trek Online this weekend exemplified what I like so much the game. Late Saturday night, I found myself drowsing at my keyboard but not quite ready to go to bed. With the Series 2: The Devidians rerun in full swing, I decided to hop online and do an episode before I crash. I found my Federation News Service fleeties already finishing up the series, but as luck would have it they had to go back to the first episode, and so I happily jumped on board. What I like most about STO is the fast, straight-forward and self-contained nature of the missions. When I run them with friends, I get all the social benefits associated with running an instance without the hassles like roles or worrying if encounters will last for hours and hours. I plugged away at the rest of the Devidian series the next day and relived the creepiness of the later episodes, taking a page from Scopique and playing it in the dark with my headphones … [Read more...] about Star Trek Online: Bonnie Kiiiin Bonnie Kiiiiin, I SEE YOU
