Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) will be launching its free to play and preferred changes for the MMORPG this month with Game Update 5.10.4. For those that don’t know, SWTOR is a free to play MMO with an optional subscription, and former paying players are known as preferred. Last month, BioWare announced that it would be making some changes to the the limitations that non-subscribers would an encounter in-game. Below are the changes coming. Increased Credit Cap Long gone are the days where you could buy a gallon of Bantha milk for five credits. Initially when SWTOR developed its Free-to-Play and Preferred models, a cap of 200,000 credits and 350,000 respectively seemed like a fair amount. Over the years, it’s become a simple truth that those credit amounts don’t buy what it used to though. As the game has grown, so has the economy. Star Wars: The Old Republic announced this week that July's 5.10.4 update will improve the free to play experience. The 3 most notable changes are the following: Credit cap for free to play users (and preferred) will be increased to 1,000,000 (up from 200,000 and 350,000). Both free to play and preferred users will get an additional quickbar. (Free to play is now 3, Preferred is now 5). Both free to play and preferred players will gain access to quick travel and medical probes. I suspect Bioware is relaxing the game's free to play restrictions to combat a declining playerbase. If you’ve listened to Massively’s staff and readers talk about Star Wars Galaxies a little bit, you might come away with the impression that the now-sunsetted, pre-WoW Star Wars sandbox was perfection in every way — that classic SWG was all fun, all the time, with no bugs and no problems, and that all MMORPGs should aspire to be it in its entirety. Not so. The thing about superfans is that no one knows the games better than we do… and no one knows their problems as we do, and in fact we could all probably fill volumes with gripes about our very favorite games.
