It’s that time of year again, and Star Wars fans everywhere are ready to celebrate. This Saturday is May the 4th. As is customary, the Star Wars The Old Republic team have planned something special for all of its players. This year, players who log in by May 6 will get their own M4-YA Astromech Droid mini-pet. The little dude, which you can see above, is a spiffy gold and blue droid that looks like he might have a lot of attitude. As part of the celebration, the SWTOR team is also offering players discounts on several items in the Cartel Market — even mounts. 50% off all collection unlocks 50% off all Appearance Options and Appearance Designer changes 40% off all available Stronghold Decorations 35% off all available Mounts Just as with the droid, this is a limited time thing and players hoping to cash in on any of the deals will need to do so before May 6. … [Read more...] about Celebrate Star Wars Day In SWTOR And Get A New Droid Pet

As a longtime Star Wars fan and former Star Wars Galaxies player, I’ve known there were plenty of emulators out there ripe for playing on. The code for the game is open source. In fact, there was a brief time where I was looking to set up my own server for the game, but I just don’t have time to do that anymore. But recently, I was surprised to find out how many SWG emu servers there are – so many different servers that I’m not exactly sure which one to get into. That’s where you guys come in. Over the next few weeks, I will be jumping into Star Wars Galaxies again here for Hyperspace Beacon, but I want you to tell how to do it in the vein of our Choose My Adventure column. Of course, I would like you to choose the server for me first, and then we will talk about the different classes or profession trees that I can travel up. And being the alt-o-holic that I am, I will likely make more than one character on a server. Fortunately, I am very familiar with … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: Which Star Wars Galaxies emulator should I try first?
It’s a two-for-one Star Wars special in this post today! A short post on the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums shed a very dim light on plans that BioWare has for the MMORPG in the near future. The next steps contain bug fixes for Patch 5.10.1, a look next month at Patch 5.10.2’s feature set, and a SW Celebration Cantina in Chicago that will contain “more news from us on what is coming this year.” So while it’s more than nothing, it’s certainly less than the meaty reveals that SWTOR fans have hoped to see. Perhaps BioWare has its attention turned elsewhere these days? But if you still carry a torch for the long-departed Star Wars Galaxies, creator Raph Koster has a suggestion for your viewing hours. He pointed fans toward Porter Robinson’s EDM album that was inspired partly by the MMO and its sunset. You can check that music out as well as its artist streaming and talking about the game after the break. … [Read more...] about SWTOR gives a skimpy roadmap while Star Wars Galaxies is remembered… in song form

If you’ve followed the Massively OP Podcast this summer or read any of my ramblings in Daily Grinds and WRUPs, you probably know that I fell into a nostalgia trap, the best kind of nostalgia trap because it’s not really nostalgia at all. In fact, it was one of you lovely readers who suggested during our Star Wars Galaxies 15th anniversary stream on the original SWGemu that we try out a semi-new emulator, an NGE emulator, one called Legends. I bookmarked it, and one bored day in July, I sat down and figured out how to get it up and running. I got logged in. I made a new toon. I slogged through the old tutorial. I didn’t really expect much, but I decided to give it a try, figuring at least I’ve have something to talk about on the next podcast. I emerged on Tatooine, scribbled down a plan, and got to work. And I haven’t really wanted to play anything else since. We go back a long way, Star Wars Galaxies and me. I had been playing MMORPGs almost six … [Read more...] about Working As Intended: Returning to Star Wars Galaxies – in 2018
