This week I got the opportunity to chat with a couple of the folks behind MapleStory, a game that you may have seen a fair amount of coverage here in recent months. Yes, this game that launched in 2003 is still going very strong, with major content updates coming out on a rather impressive schedule. You see, every time I talk about MapleStory there are some questions that I see revolving the content that I’m talking about and often times I don’t exactly have an answer. Who is the Black Mage, what are these theme dungeons, what’s the deal with the Reboot server, etc. So we brought Nexon on board, and they were happy to provide two of their own to give us some answers; Nam Jun (NJ), Global MapleStory Lead Game Designer, as well as Young Mi (YM), Global MapleStory Leaders of Planning and Designing. Us: What is the current state of the MapleStory story for those that may not have kept up with the game in recent times? Nam Jun: Going back to the story from last winter in … [Read more...] about Nexon Talks: The Story of MapleStory

That feeling when something is so close yet misses the mark — in a painful, how-on-earth-can-you-miss-that-giant-glowing-target way. The good news is that a Secret World-themed Halloween spinoff game is happening this year! I have missed those, and they are a highlight in my favorite season. Yay! The bad news is that so far, there is still no new story content on the horizon for Secret World Legends. None. Not a word. And yeah, that seriously sucks. It is possible to be happy to see the Secret World IP expand with new adventures and still frustrated that the main game is ignored. (To be precise, I should say second main game as TSW is beyond forgotten, it is shoved in a closet and doomed to be forever purposefully ignored.) As excited as I am for the newly announced spinoff Moons of Madness, I am equally disappointed that my favorite game is still languishing with no end of the story drought in sight. Is SWL joining its older sibling? Come on, Funcom. At this point you just need … [Read more...] about Chaos Theory: Secret World is getting new story content, but it’s not in Secret World Legends
I have mixed feelings about TennoCon 2019. Don’t get me wrong — I am excited as all get out and look forward to going! TennoCon is always an amazing experience; the first one ever got me playing Warframe, and each one after has accelerated the excitement with amazing expansion announcements. However, therein lies the rub: I am also anxious because I have yet to finish up the core content before the new goodies come about each time. At last year’s convention, devs encouraged me to be sure to catch up before Fortuna launched. And I didn’t, so I’ve missed out in some ways. Besides the things going on in life (like a job that has me playing myriad other games), I am an unapologetic slowpoke who savors story, valuing the journey over the destination. I have always played at my own pace, but doing so has been hampering my ability to immerse myself in Warframe’s newest content when it comes. This year, I aim to change that. So here’s my goal: to … [Read more...] about Warframe of Mind: Can we catch up in Warframe’s story before TennoCon?
Play Secret World LegendsIf there is one thing this past week has emphasized to me, it’s that powering through just the main story missions of Secret World Legends is bad. Heed my warning and learn from my mistakes — don’t do it! It is definitely not an ideal way to experience the game. Why? Because although it is awesome to see the story arc play through in large, seamless blocks, you really so miss so much. You miss a great deal of the story, flavor, and atmosphere. And by missing chunks of the rest of the story in the game, you’ve cheated yourself of a richer — and longer — experience. When it ends all too soon, you are left wanting more… more you could have had. Even though I have experienced 99% of the mission content before (thanks to completing the story through Tokyo in TSW), I seriously wish I could take back my sprinting to the Season 2 content. I don’t regret having the opportunity to show South Africa off to everyone on OPTV, … [Read more...] about Chaos Theory: Rushing Secret World Legends’ main story mission is a bad idea
