If you were paying attention to anything other than WoW Classic on Monday, you might recall that Star Wars: The Old Republic slipped in the fact that it was delaying its expansion from September to October. If you were paying extra good attention, you might have seen that BioWare’s going to give out a free unlock for the Nautolan race to its subscribers as (unspoken) compensation. The studio followed that announcement up with a subsequent post explaining just what you’ll need to do to get that free unlock. For starters, you’ll need to be subscribed at some point between September 1st and October 22nd. Even if you end your sub early, you’ll meet the qualifications for the unlock. The race itself won’t be handed to you until the October 22nd launch of Onslaught. If you’re going from free-to-play to subscription just for a month, be aware that you’ll get some cartel coins to spend on useful items and unlocks as well as full access to your bank … [Read more...] about SWTOR explains just how you’ll get that free Nautolan unlock

Note: I know I’m a little later than usual when it comes to discussing the Star Wars: The Old Republic Friday update, but reading the new information on companions as well as the IGN interview really gave me a lot to think about. Before I continue though, a word of warning: I didn’t realize there was going to be so much gushing and girly-ness when I wrote this. I guess I’m feeling giddy because I’m going away for the weekend. I think a lot of people are concerned that the companions in Star Wars: The Old Republic will take on too much of an important role, and start discouraging grouping and social behavior. Frankly, I’m not too concerned about that. Granted, if anyone can make the idea of playing with AI companions seem more enthralling than playing with real people, it would be Bioware’s talented writing team. But personally, I’m into MMOs to play with others, so having companions isn’t going to stop me from being social. Instead, what … [Read more...] about SWTOR Companions: Prospects For Fan Writing
A lengthy blog post has cropped up on the Neverwinter site from Systems Designer Salim Grant. In it, sweeping changes are coming to the Pet and Companions systems in time for the release of the next content expansion, Undermountain. The overhaul is designed to provide a more streamlined and useful experience for players. Here are a few of the details: Active companion slots are going away. Rather than that, players will equip specific bonuses based on role - Offense, Defense & Utility. The strength of the bonus is determined by the quality of the companion Companions will have unique equipment and will not be able to wear player equipment any more. Equipment that companions wear is now universal and slots have been globalized. "No matter what companion you decide to switch to, the equipment will apply to the summoned companion". Runestone slots have changed to Bonding runestone slots and work like Eldritch stones to augment companions Leveling companions, even the ones in … [Read more...] about Neverwinter Companion & Pet Systems to be Shaken Up with Undermountain
When Lord of the Rings Online announced its new progression server plan earlier this week, the LOTRO community immediately went into a state of puzzlement. See, the server does have that progression style popular with other Daybreak titles; it’ll begin with that launch-content experience and roll out the other expansions and zones as it goes. The catch is that it’s keeping all of the classes and traits and mechanics changes from the current game. If you were hoping for a less-bloated gameplay setup on the Legendary server, you aren’t getting that. You’re basically getting the current game, on a fresh subscription server, with all the players herded into a specific level-band. It’s not a bad thing, of course, but it did leave folks wondering whom, exactly, the new server is for. As Andang put it, it seems as if SSG is simply putting up a clean server for existing players wanting a new alt experience, rather than catering to fans hoping for a burst of … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Are you planning to give LOTRO’s new progression server a try?
