As a longtime Star Wars fan and former Star Wars Galaxies player, I’ve known there were plenty of emulators out there ripe for playing on. The code for the game is open source. In fact, there was a brief time where I was looking to set up my own server for the game, but I just don’t have time to do that anymore. But recently, I was surprised to find out how many SWG emu servers there are – so many different servers that I’m not exactly sure which one to get into. That’s where you guys come in. Over the next few weeks, I will be jumping into Star Wars Galaxies again here for Hyperspace Beacon, but I want you to tell how to do it in the vein of our Choose My Adventure column. Of course, I would like you to choose the server for me first, and then we will talk about the different classes or profession trees that I can travel up. And being the alt-o-holic that I am, I will likely make more than one character on a server. Fortunately, I am very familiar with … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: Which Star Wars Galaxies emulator should I try first?

As with a lot of entertainment this past year, my hectic life kept free time down — and reading with it. I’m finding that I actually get more reading done if I tote around my Kindle with me everywhere, but by and large, I didn’t have as much time to chew through novels this year. That said, I read probably around 20 of them, and I wanted to at least share with you my favorite from that batch, plus a couple of audiobook mentions! Here goes. #1: The Stars Were Right by Alexander While I got bogged down in the second book, I rather enjoyed the first one right out of the gate. It’s set in a sort-of industrial, frontier fantasy world where a guy is framed for a murder he didn’t commit and has to go on the run while uncovering a wide conspiracy. Just really impressed with all of the races and world building, and the main characters were pretty likable as well. #2: Grey Sister by Lawrence Lawrence’s Book of the Ancestor series takes the … [Read more...] about 5 favorite novels I read (and listened to) in 2018
While I’m mainly concentrating on getting my $5 worth out of WoW this month XD , I wanted to post about some changes to the Dragoon class in FFXIV that really got me excited. I’ve been guilty of not logging into FFXIV for a while, though I remain subbed to the game. I just felt the desire to switch it up some after spending hours of grinding levels for my Ninja in FFXIV, whiclh led me to trying AA and WoW this fall. My Dragoon History I just didn’t enjoy the way it played. I found the constant positional requirements a real frustration, especially since you were never promised to have a good tank… or even a tank at all. Since I’m often the tank for my duo team with Syn, or soloing hunts on Tai, positional attacks just couldn’t happen, which lowered my overall DPS. Dodging in and out of AOE ground attacks was a pain, too, but something I learned to deal with. It still chafed me that the Dragoon’s magic defense was much lower than any other … [Read more...] about FFXIV Gives Some Luv to the Dragoons in Patch 2.45
I was reading the patch notes for the latest update to my favorite Star Wars Galaxies emulator when this line just leaped right out at me: “Rename is available again via a new Smuggler ability, Off the Record. The smuggler must use the command outside of all NPC and player cities. The command has a 30 minute cooldown, separate from existing abilities. The Smuggler calls in a Black Market Agent who can give you a new identity …for a price!” Now, obviously, an unsanctioned player-run emulator like this doesn’t have to worry about costs because it isn’t making money in the first place, so naturally its developers’ first thought is to add any cool new concept to an actual player class rather than put it in a lockbox or cash shop, but in most MMOs, character renames go straight to the shop. This is so refreshing to me, not to mention in keeping with SWG’s spirit (this is a game where players are also barbers and tattoo artists!), and I wish we could … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: What skills should MMOs give players – but never do?
Here's a great question for you guys. Who should pull mobs for the group if there is no dedicated pulling class - Crowd Control, DPS with aggro drop ability (Smoke bomb, FD etc.), the main tank or another option? First, I have to stop and appreciate for just a minute how awesome a game is when there are actually pulling classes. For a pulling class to exist, that means there must first be a mechanic which requires a group to sit back and brings mobs to it rather than faceroll through everything or 'play through' content. Then you have to actually have a class with uniquely designed abilities that aren't homogenized across all of the other classes and "core" archetypes like healer, tank, and dps. When there's a puller class, there's also typically a CC class and a support class that isn't a healer, and chances are class variety and role filling is quite varied too. Now to the question. If there's one available, I prefer a highly-skilled crowd control class. In EverQuest, that … [Read more...] about Who Should Pull Mobs?
