Seven years is a long time to play a game. The morning of August 25, 2012 was a glorious day as I skipped over the hills of Queensdale as Guild Wars 2 was unleashed on the world. We were ready for the casual MMO that you could drop in and out of whenever you liked and you’d still be able to keep up as the horizontal progression and cosmetic endgame meant that you could drop back in any time you liked. Legendary weapons were the long-term goal and Giganticus Lupicus was the benchmark for high end play and hilarious game-breaking exploits. advertisement So, what the hell happened? You happened. Yeah, you. The players. Now, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing that you just so happened to ‘git gud’. Whether your realized it or not, the community has got better at playing the game. New players are held to, and meet, a high standard of play than was displayed and/or expected in the first few years of the game.Let me explain.Casuals and elitists. My WoW Story Ten years ago today I started playing World of Warcraft. In truth that is a bit of a misnomer since I technically started as of ten years ago 11 pm last night. When World of Warcraft launched there was so much excitement surrounding it. This was not my first MMO by any means and I had already played significant amounts of time of both Everquest (roughly 3 years), Dark Age of Camelot (roughly 2 years), Horizon (6 months) and City of Heroes (6 months). Between those four games I had already amassed a large group of friends that all intended to play Warcraft at the launch. That is the hard thing to explain these days, but World of Warcraft was this one game that every single player that played it… wanted to play more of. I remember getting into one of the stress test betas, and that one weekend of playing the game completely destroyed my enjoyment of City of Heroes. Just a few hours of play showed me that these games I already … [Read more...] about Happy 10th Anniversary
Like so many other friends that I saw on Twitter, I spent longer than expected watching the Bethesda showcase on Sunday night. Thought it might have been 45 minutes, hour tops, but that sucker kept on going for 1.5 hours as the company kept announcing countless games and updates. Some were pretty paltry, some huge, but really, I was just there for one title: Fallout 76. I think it’s safe to say that no matter what they announced, unless it was a piddly battle royale thing, I’d be playing it. But what I was hoping for, crossing my fingers for, was to see Fallout 76 take a step toward that Fallout MMO that I’ve always wanted. I got more than I expected, really. Bethesda angered some, bewildered others, and absolutely delighted me by announcing that Fallout 76 would be a completely online game in a persistent world with standard questing, socialization, co-op, crafting, base building, and the like. There will be “dozens” of players on each small server shard … [Read more...] about Fallout 76: Generally happy, slightly worried
Behind the Times There are times I am just extremely far behind the curve. For weeks I had been seeing pictures of my friends characters with a little orange bird on their heads named Pepe. I thought this was absolutely adorable since one of the things I have enjoyed so much is the way that certain pets in Final Fantasy XIV will come rest on your shoulder. Turns out that this is a bit of a hack and not really pet interaction. For those not already indoctrinated in the ways of Pepe… he is a bird that will appear in one of the trees of your garrison. Apparently he can appear in either the phase 1, 2 or 3 version. I’ve started typing “/tar pepe” to find him and mark him with a symbol so that I can find him either. In any case if you mouse over him you will see a gear icon meaning that he can somehow be activated. If you click on him, he will ride around on top of your head for an hour as you go off adventuring in the … [Read more...] about Happy Thanksgiving
Just one hour to go before you too can play World of Warcraft Battle for Azeroth! Just kidding, the only thing you’re going to be playing tonight is Queue Wars. And it’s almost here! Blizzard’s posted a handy chart for the global simultaneous release so you don’t miss it. Although seasoned MMORPG veterans will probably be playing something else tonight and letting the rush subside, right? Nobody took off work this week believing play will happen, right? Right guys? Guys? While you wait: VG247 has interview today with Blizzard’s Gary Platner and Terran Gregory loaded with fun quotes. Here’s one that’s gripping and somehow chilling at the same time: “Afrasiabi designed this expansion like it would be the last – don’t hold back, go for the mega, seize the day on design. Everyone on this team is absolutely committed to seeing that this thing is as powerful and relevant as long as we can. […] We’ll ride this thing until … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft’s Battle for Azeroth is launching in one hour – are you prepared?
