It’s been a while since we last talked to Derek Smart. A year and a half, almost, if you’ve been keeping count. Last time we talked about Quest Online and Alganon, focusing on aspects of free to play and how Quest Online was promoting the game. With the approach of Line of Defense and a few changes over the past year in the free to play market, I thought it was about time to get back in touch. In the interview, we discuss Line of Defense including plans for the game’s monetization, the use of lockboxes in other titles, and some thoughts on the competition for Line of Defense. I always enjoy the opportunity to have a chat with Mr. Smart, he’s one of the few people I can trust to not hold back or filter his answers through a PR machine. You may know Derek Smart from Alganon, Line of Defense, as well as the Battlecruiser line of space simulators. Q. How will Line of Defense balance free to play with a premium model? Players gain Combat Experience Points (CEP) by … [Read more...] about Derek Smart Returns: Free To Play, Line of Defense, Lockboxes

Guild Chat: When sibling rivalry is ruining MMO guild relations
Welcome along to Guild Chat, the column through which I attempt to resolve all of your guild-related issues with the help of the Massively Overpowered commenter community. This time, reader Sol has asked for help in bringing some sibling conflict to an end in his guild: He is an officer who is at the mercy of the two guild leaders, who happen to be sisters who seem to disagree on most guild leading decisions. Sol is frequently asked to arbitrate the disputes and frequently ends up in the firing line himself as a result, and adding to this is the knock-on effect their rather public arguments are having on guild membership levels. Sol is torn: Should he keep on trying to make peace between the sisters, or should he move on to pastures new in the hopes of finding a more comfortable in-game home? Check out his full submission and my advice on the matter below, and don’t forget to add your thoughts on the topic in the comments. “Tina, my guild leaders are driving … [Read more...] about Guild Chat: When sibling rivalry is ruining MMO guild relations

I guess time will … [Read more...] about Global Chat: WoW Classic impressions mega-compilation
#TSW Automatically Join Custom Chat Channels
Today is the big patch day, and I am having to pacify myself by listening to The Secret World soundtrack while at work. We’ve had report from in game, that custom chat channels are now working again. You have to rejoin the channel when you first log in, and then reportedly the tab stays bound. That said, it is probably still safest to use the Auto Join script. This won’t be a “real” post, but I wanted to throw together a quick howto for setting up the Auto Join scripts. Credit goes to Scopique of Levelcapped for tipping me off to this existing in the first place. Creating Auto Login Find your Secret World install directory, this is typically “C:\Program Files\Funcom\The Secret World”. If you do not already have a scripts directory, create one aka “Scripts”. Inside the “C:\Program Files\Funcom\The Secret World\Scripts” directory, create two new files: “auto_login” and … [Read more...] about #TSW Automatically Join Custom Chat Channels
