After much consternation, swearing, and the odd reboot it finally happened. I upgraded my PC. I squeezed every penny together I had spare, got new components, prayed to Zommoros that whatever collection of trash I could afford would spit out at least 60FPS, and I started Guild Wars 2. advertisement The result, as you will guess, is a much more complex question than throwing money at a screen and waiting for more power to push past the 60 barrier. MMORPG performance is a multi-faceted issue. It covers various types of technology, distributed computer systems, as well as a multitude of hardware and software layers. So, when one of the community asked what was bottlenecking their game we really had to split the whole question down into several chunks. Going forward I’ll be taking a high-level overview of a number of these technologies, and discussing the systems particular to Guild Wars 2. We might even get some buy-in from ArenaNet on the squirely black magic that … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2 Is Slow…. Is It Time for a New PC?

So, not only did last night’s FFXIV Live Letter drop a bunch of bombs about how battle and classes are going to change, but the very last thing announced was that finally, the Shadowbringers Benchmark is here! Even if you don’t have a sub or a copy of the game, you can install the benchmark and play around with character creation for all races, including the new Viera and Hrothgar. You can also put your PC to the test to see how well it will run Shadowbringers once the expansion launches. This was very timely because I had just buttoned up my brand new gaming rig last night! Below is not the best picture, but it does show how much LED and rainbow is on my mother board now. I’m a bit behind on the times, so I didn’t expect my RAM to actually double rainbow like that. So, a little over two weeks ago, I wrote about how I had a power supply I needed to return to Newegg. It had taken a beating during shipping and I wasn’t going to take a chance with it in a … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Shadowbringers Benchmark & My New PC
While large teams with big budgets and studios backing them are expected to push out smash hit MMORPGs, to me it’s always vastly more fascinating when a small crew are able to whip up an operational MMO with the odds against them. With so few resources and so much riding on the shoulders of each developer, such games only happen through an unimaginable amount of work and driving passion. So maybe you have never heard of Minions of Mirth, a 2005 MMO that ran about as quiet as can be for a little over a decade, but I guarantee you that after you read this column, you will have a healthy respect for what a few devs can do when they feel the call to make a virtual world. In many ways, it was a game ahead of its time with a flexible business model and off- and online game modes. I think that deserves a closer look, don’t you? Fear, work, and stress In the fall of 2003, married couple Josh Ritter (Engebretson) and Lara Engebretson co-founded Prairie Games, a small California … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: Minions of Mirth

Gaming Influences A few days ago one of my friends that works in the games industry was talking about a thing that had been circulating around his studio. The idea was for each of the folks to create a list of the fifteen games that most influenced them, or taunt them something new that games could do. While this is a really helpful exercise in the gaming industry I am sure, I figured it would also be pretty fun to do as a lifelong gamer and gaming blogger. The thing I was not realizing while going into it… was just how hard it would be to pair things down to a list of fifteen games. There are so many titles I wanted to include, but I had to come up with a hard rationale for each and every one on the list. So there will be titles that are conspicuously absent, and others that I have included that you wouldn’t think of. However the final list includes titles that I learned some lesson from along the way. Gauntlet (1985) I grew up … [Read more...] about 15 Gaming Influences
