Trove launched last Thursday and a lot of people are curious whether this game is any good. I will try to give you an impression of the game, but will try to keep it short(ish). There is a quite simple reason for this: This is the 4th time that I’m writing down my impressions of Trove. The first time was in July 2014, when Trove was still in alpha. The second time was during closed beta in October 2014. The third time was during open beta in February 2015. You may also notice quite a lot of similarities between this post here and the one from February. I had tried to write a new impression piece, but found that so many things from the post in February still hold true that I decided to rework this blog post and bring it up-to-date instead of writing everything again. An additional note: An online game’s launch is usually accompanied by queue times etc. when a lot of people want to play the game at the same time. I will not write about this here, though, as I’m certain … [Read more...] about Post-launch Impressions: Is Trove a good game?

The first Tree of Savior Closed Beta had just ended a few days ago leaving me hungry for more! Welcome to the 3rd and a final part of my Tree of Savior Closed Beta Review. Are you ready to learn more about the game? I am hoping that my reviews and videos will satisfy your current ToS thirst for the time being. At least until the international test begins. Just a fair warning that most of the content is CBT material and may change in the future for better or worst. Questing and Leveling - How Fast Can I Get Max Level!? I believe the current level cap for Tree of Savior CBT is level 150 or 200, which may sound a bit grindy. Honestly, the leveling pace for this game is extremely fast. Hardcore players could easily obtain level 100-150 in a day or two. Especially if the servers were to open 24 hours a day compared to the usual 8 hour testing windows. IMCGames made Tree of Savior friendly towards new MMORPG players by making it very quest heavy. In short, you pick up quests along the map … [Read more...] about STEPARU News, Reviews, Previews & Information for Foreign Games Tree of Savior Online Closed Beta Review in Progress Part 3 Finale
Great news! Bless Online is coming to NA/EU according to Bless-Source. I've been spending a lot of my time exploring the endgame content of the game in both PvE and PvP. Today, I will preview one of the two end-game dungeons in Bless Online. I believe this is the dungeon that you must clear and fully gear on before moving on to the next dungeon. I added some on-screen text to the video to help the new and current players of Bless Online. There seems to be a lot of Foreigners playing the game from all over the world. I've met a lot of Taiwan, Chinese, Russian, and American players in the game. The dungeon difficulty of the game isn't that hard once you've learned the pattern. An experienced party can clear it in less than 30 minutes while some parties can take over 2 hours long depending on experience and players. There are certain bosses that require certain strategy while some bosses like the one above only requires common sense. You can probably get by doing the dungeons without … [Read more...] about STEPARU News, Reviews, Previews & Information for Foreign Games Bless Online First Look Endgame Dungeon Preview and Guide
It’s no surprise that Ready Player One was constantly being referenced at GDC 2018, especially in VR, AR, and MMO panels. It’s not just because of the movie’s release but because the tech involved is seeing a surge of interest. That doesn’t mean we’re on the cusp, in my opinion, but it may be a thing we should start talking about. And talking about it we did. As Bill Roper of Improbable and SpatialOS recently told me, “The next generation of online games isn’t going to behave like current-generation MMOs. […] We don’t know what a billion-person game might look like, but it’s likely to include a wide variety of playstyles, to reflect the diversity of its playerbase.” Even if you’re a cynic and don’t think SpatialOS will play any part of this future, Roper’s very much on the mark: Billion-person gaming isn’t going to be like our current MMOs. Roper moderated a panel on the topic, … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Ready Player One Now, billion person gaming, and mitigating abuse
Video games had a huge impact on my childhood and teenage years, imprinting themselves onto my psyche for all of the struggles and elation that they produced. While I did play consoles in my youth, most of my gaming time was spent on the PC, particularly during the 1990s. As such, I have a strong fondness (nostalgia goggles alert!) for older games, to the point where I still play and blog about them. While some definitely have not withstood the test of time, you’d be surprised how many older PC titles are still quite enjoyable and even downright compelling today. I think we all have our lists of game franchises that we wish were made into MMORPGs, and today I’m going to look at 10 of some of my favorite older PC games (most, but not all, from the ’90s) and give a few ideas how each could work as a proper MMO. 1. Deus Ex Still an incredible game to this day, Deus Ex truly delivered on the promise of playing your way, with multiple paths and techniques that could be … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: Older PC games that would make for great MMOs
