The hunt will soon be on in Citadel Studios’s moddable sandbox MMO Legends of Aria, which has just announced its upcoming Relic of the Ancients event. Over the course of the event, which will run this weekend from February 15th to February 17th, “players will be challenged to decipher clues to discover ever-changing ‘hotspots’ throughout the game world.” Players who manage to puzzle out the whereabouts of these hotspots will find it to be well worth their while, as enemies found in those locations “will drop their regular loot and some extras too.” Hotspots can appear in both the relative safety of the guarded zone as well as the harsh, unforgiving wilderness, though the press release notes that creatures in the wilderness will offer players a chance at the best loot. In addition to bonus loot drops, players can also find and collect Relic Fragments that can be exchanged for “super secret exclusive items.” Citadel also has a letter … [Read more...] about Legends of Aria sends players on a treasure hunt in its Relics of the Ancients event

The Game Archaeologist: The Island of Kesmai
It was the mid-’80s, and I was just a kid in love with his family’s IBM PC. Not having a wealth of capital at the time, I relied on hand-me-down copies of software that rolled in from friends and family and probably the Cyber-Mafia. Practically none of the disks came with instructions (or even labels, sometimes), and as such I felt like an explorer uncovering hidden gems as I shoved in 5 1/4″ floppy after 5 1/4″ floppy. Some titles were great fun, some were so obtuse I couldn’t get into them, and some were obviously meant for those older and wiser than I. One game that fell into the latter category was a brutally difficult RPG that smelt of Dungeons & Dragons — a forbidden experience for me at the time. It was just a field of ASCII characters, jumbled statistics, and instant death awaiting me around every corner. I gave it a few tries but could never progress past the first level, especially when I’d keep running out of arrows, so I gave … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: The Island of Kesmai
Darkfall: New Dawn puts the finishing touches on its magic schools
Fun fact: Did you know that Darkfall: New Dawn has a skill called “eye rot?” Isn’t that all you will be thinking about for the rest of today? It’s an infectious fact! Now that our eyes are twitching, we can try to distract ourselves with the changes to New Dawn’s magical schools with Update 2.1. “The theme of this patch is finishing up on the mechanical changes for magic,” the team said. “Our general goal with magic is to have schools that play differently, as bundles of spells.” As such, the developers have made adjustments to arcane magic, necromancy, and certain signature spells like earthquake, healing chant, come hither, and wall of force. Following this magic-centric patch, the devs will review some of the game’s melee weapons and finish equalizing the magic and physical progression paths. “We are now in the interface phase, still quite a bit to do,” they said.
