Earlier today, on April 5, 2018 Publish 99 for Ultima Online went live worldwide. The new update comes with a host of features, the most notable of which is Endless Journey -- a free to play account tier for the previously subscription-only MMORPG. Ultima Online was first released in 1997 and is credited with bringing the MMORPG genre to the mainstream. The game required a subscription to access and has undergone significant updates since its release. New and returning players taking advantage of Endless Journey will have access to all Ultima Online expansions through Stygian Abyss. Additional expansions can be purchased individually. While Endless Journey imposes no restrictions on character progression, it does come with a few glaring issues. First and foremost, free players will not be able to access their bank storage. Additionally, free players will not be able to place, own, or co-own a house. These two restricts will severely limit the ability of free players to accumulate and … [Read more...] about Ultima Online Free To Play Patch, Endless Journey, Now Live
If you were around in the early days of MMOs, you probably played Ultima Online. How well we remember the "scary music" when a PK would range near as we were innocently chopping wood to try to craft some type of weapon. Ah, the good old days! The Broadsword team took time out to thank players for their participation and "to those who have left their mark on [the] humble virtual world!" 21 years ago Ultima Online changed the video game landscape forever. Sosaria spawned a virtual world where people could adventure together and forge friendships that would last a lifetime. Today we celebrate that legacy by wishing UO a very happy birthday and thanking all those Britannians who have left their mark on our humble virtual world. Long live UO! What are your favorite memories of Ultima Online! Let us know! Thanks as always for the tip, BlueTurtle13! … [Read more...] about Ultima Online Celebrates Its 21st Birthday & Can Now Legally Buy a Beer!
The template for all online games grew out of the 1990s. Many people recall Everquest as the game which changed everything and it did, trust me. However, before you had EQ, you had UO. Ultima Online created the core ideas and concepts that have driven the MMO genre for 21 straight years. Ultima gave us an early look at what PvP on a large scale might be like, it allowed players to explore a world together for the first time. Ultima Online was a revolution, and it changed everything.Logging into the screen for the first time and creating a character was not easy back then. There were no preset templates. You had to hook in by phone modem which was, well, a risky attempt at best. Once you got started there was always the fear of crashing. As you entered the world you met NPCs and players. Sometimes unsure which was which. You found your niche whether it was crafting or combat. You learned spells and maybe even were lucky enough to ride a horse.PvP was something that had barely been … [Read more...] about What Ultima Online Gave us 21 Years Ago
The Ultima Online newsletter reveals great news for fans of the game. After over two decades, the team is committed to bringing players tons of new High Seas action throughout 2019. The commitment to adding High Seas content comes after years of community requests at meet and greets, various player gatherings, forum feedback and more. So what does that mean for publishes this year? Is every publish going to be about sailing the oceans, fishing, and pirate hunting? Not exactly - but close! Our goal is to continue to support the events and systems you have come to love while revamping the areas of the High Seas that need it most. In each publish we will be tackling a major High Seas content area and combining it with often requested new features, content, quality of life updates, client updates, tools, and bug fixes. Publish 104 will be called Rising Tide and will include: new veteran rewards an update to the classic client to better … [Read more...] about Lots of New High Seas Action Coming to Ultima Online
Plenty of panels at GDC are recorded and uploaded to the internet weeks after the event. It’s not quite the same as being there, as you miss a few things. For example, this year’s Ultima Online Post-Mortem panel was packed. It was international. It was fun, gross, nostalgiac, and sometimes groan-inducing. And I’d hate to just summarize the talk, especially since some of you vets have heard these stories before, but since ya’ll couldn’t make it, I’ll do it. For you. But for this particular panel, not only will I try to summarize what was said before the panel will be viewable online in a few weeks, but I’ll dish out on the after-panel chat with Richard Garriott, Starr Long, Raph Koster, and Rich Vogel, including comments from the team on bad bans, kingslaying, VR, and the state of the MMORPG. Doom desires Let’s set the stage for a moment here. As the UO team pointed out, our current setups are significantly better than … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Ultima Online post-mortem with Richard Garriott, Starr Long, Raph Koster, and Rich Vogel
