Play League of Legends for freeRiot is bringing PvE back to League of Legends with a new event, Odyssey, which will see players boarding Jinx’s spaceship, the Morning Star, and venturing to an alien planet to save Ziggs from a disastrous crash landing. As players battle through Odyssey’s five difficulty levels, they will unlock Augments for their champions, permanently increasing their powers. Success will be rewarded with new skins for Kayn, Sona, Jinx, Yasou, Ziggs, and Malphite, as well as with an IRL skin in the form of a Mornin Star Crew Jacket that players will be able to purchase after completing the Odyssey mode’s intro difficulty. Players will also be able to delve further into the lore of League of Legends with a new short story penned by comic book writer and novelist Dan Abnett. The Odyssey mode goes live tomorrow, September 11th, but while you wait, you can check out the Odyssey animated trailer after the cut. Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had some tantalizing rumors and teases that both Riot Games and Blizzard are building something new: Riot’s dangled some questions about maybe making an MMORPG – might it be a League of Legends MMO? – and Blizzard’s outright said it’s returning to the Diablo franchise for multiple projects (one of which is the Switch port announced this morning). Can we hope for an MMO from one of the big studios again – and should we? That’s what we’re pondering in this week’s Massively Overthinking. Do you think either of these companies is actually working on a new MMORPG using an old IP, what might it look like if so, what are they working on if not, and what do you actually want to see happen? Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): On the Diablo side of things, I’m kind of lost. Not just because the franchise does nothing for me, but I can’t imagine multiple games coming from the IP unless … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Would you want to play a League of Legends or Diablo MMORPG?
Play League of Legends for freeLet’s play connect-the-dots today and see if we can see a picture forming over at Riot Games, shall we? Back in July, its co-founder dropped a befuddling tease about the studio creating an MMO, which was then somewhat refuted a week later. Then the studio continued to talk way too much about MMOs to anyone who would listen. Now there’s a new dot in the shape of Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street, who announced that he’s leaving the League of Legends team to work on one or more projects in development. One of these couldn’t possibly be an MMO that need the help of a former World of Warcraft dev… could it? “My new position at Riot is head of creative development,” Street said. “We’ve been up front that we want to put the ‘s’ in Riot Games, and I am helping with that effort. In addition, we have been taking Runeterra as a world more seriously, as you’ve probably realized with the … [Read more...] about League of Legends Lead Designer Ghostcrawler moves to an unnamed project
There’s a new thinkpiece out on how Fortnite happened and what it all means every week lately, but SuperData’s latest might be a comfort to the rest of the industry. Analyst Bethany Lyons argues that Fortnite’s wild success isn’t coming at the expense of all other games. “Fortnite Battle Royale has grown without disrupting the bottom line or player base of a surprising number of free-to-play games. For example, the title has increased its console revenue in May at a rate of 12% month-over-month, while other free-to-play console games stayed more or less consistent,” she writes. So that’s revenue. What about users? Other games are still growing, some even faster than Fortnite, she says, particularly in the free-to-play console market, which is encouraging competitors to focus there. And streaming? Seems hours-watched on Twitch for the big games have stayed fairly even too as Fortnite has taken off. On the other land, Lyons admits, League of … [Read more...] about SuperData: Fortnite’s success hit League of Legends and PUBG hard, but not all online games are struggling
The last few League of Legends patches has been absolutely chock-full of updates, changes, and balance. So this one’s going to be brief because it’s smaller changes, balance tweaks, and minor fixes to things to make them perhaps feel more balanced and work better. Unfortunately, I missed 8.13, but I’m back with 8.14. This is also focused on Aatrox, now that his rework has happened. Let’s be honest, he’s . . . a bit on the strong side. At least during the laning phase, Aatrox is a nightmare to deal with, so he’s been tweaked a bit. I don’t want to focus on everything though, so I’m going to talk about a few of the major things, then list some of the buffs/nerfs that will be coming in this patch. One thing I think is interesting, is how gold/jungle items changed. If you have the most individual total gold on your team, lane minions will grant less gold. Now, I’m sure there are some people howling about it, but I like this change, and … [Read more...] about League of Legends – Patch 8.14 Discussion
