BioWare had a lot to say and show about Onslaught, the next expansion for Star Wars: The Old Republic, including a bunch of screenshots from the planets of Onderon, Dxun, Mek-Sha and Corellia. The devs also showed off the newest character to be your best friend, the gritty Jedi Padawan Arn: Apart from all the new images, there was some news to dish out. Notably, SWTOR is getting even better for free players, with previous expansions Shadow of Revan and Rise of the Hutt Cartel becoming free for everyone — no subscription required. Before it launched, I got the scoop on Shadow of Revan directly from the folks at BioWare, so read up on that if you’re looking forward to the soon-to-be free expansion. Also, if you’re looking to level up some alts in anticipation of Onslaught’s arrival, you can do so with a double XP event, running from July 23 to Aug. 20. That will still give you a couple of weeks to take a break until Onslaught’s launch in September. Or, you … [Read more...] about SWTOR Will Make Old Expansions Free When Onslaught Arrives

Play Final Fantasy XIVPatch 4.1 arrived in Final Fantasy XIV, and the Shirogane housing rush came and went exactly how everyone familiar with the game had been expecting for months on end. The plots available sold out in a matter of minutes, the people who were lucky enough to get in ahead of the queues were the ones who got new houses, and everyone else was left to rant and rave. Frankly, it all worked great, technically speaking; there were no sudden disconnections, no horrid lag spikes, no zone crashes, nothing. Everything worked exactly as it was supposed to and nothing broke, which means that by definition, nothing went wrong. Well, unless you count shining a harsh light on the game’s horribly misguided housing design as “something going wrong.” A lot of discussions about this seem to be missing the point. It’s not that what happened with Shirogane housing was a disaster; it was a model of efficiency and the game working as intended. Calling it a disaster … [Read more...] about Wisdom of Nym: Final Fantasy XIV has a serious housing problem for basically no reason

Trion Worlds announced today that the next expansion for ArcheAge titled "ArcheAge: Legends Return" launches on April 5th and will be known as update 4.5. The new update adds new customizable dragon mounts which can be raised and used as battle mounts. The update also adds new major world bosses as well as major balance changes to many of the game's classes. The launch of 4.5 also brings with it 2 new progression server, both of which will be available to free users on day 1. Players who pre-order a Legends Return Entry Pack can secure their names beforehand. These packs run for $9.99 - $99.99. Personally, I'm quite glad to see Trion Worlds give access to progression servers for free. Numerous other titles, including Rift from Trion, requires a monthly sub to access these progression servers. I suspect the fresh start servers will be a big hit, as they have been with other MMORPGs. Like other progression servers, these new servers will start off with limited content and lower level … [Read more...] about ArcheAge 4.5 Update Launching April 5, Adding 2 New Progression Servers
Let me start this off by saying when I was growing up I was a very poor kid. I grew up in a poor family and couldn’t afford most video games. I, therefore, ended up renting them. Now, I’ve played a lot of MMORPGs over the years, most of them free to play, and a couple of them pay to play. This was after I got much older though and could actually afford a subscription based MMORPG. World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, Rift when it was still a good game, TERA when it was pay to play. They all seemed so much better than popular free to play games like Fiesta, Perfect World, Revelation Online, Closers. So what makes pay to play MMORPGs that much better? Or for that matter, do you even believe pay to play MMORPGs are? I do. I know what you’re thinking. “It’s because pay to play MMORPGs have huge budgets! They can put more time, effort and money into their game.” With that being said, what makes people so inclined to play a pay to play MMORPG? Is it … [Read more...] about What Makes Pay To Play MMORPGs Better Than Free To Play MMORPGs?
