In the Closers update dropping tonight it appears that the nights are for hunters. Hunter’s Night is the name of the first part of the new season, for example, and it’s also the new town hub that players will unlock. This means new mission dungeons, new endgame dungeons, and of course new gear and improvements to existing equipment. Players will also be able to unlock new costumes along the way, so long as they meet the minimum level of 80 to start accessing the new content. The level cap is also being raised to 85 for all characters with this patch, so everyone’s going to be spending some time gaining those levels; there’s also a competition to see who can reach that level cap first, as you would no doubt expect. Combine that with new offerings in the game’s EMP store and there’s plenty to chew on in the update; the only downside is that you’ll need to wait a little while longer, as maintenance is set to start at midnight EST. … [Read more...] about Closers brings its Rogue Agents update with a new season and level cap

Can PvP spark the fires of excitement for EverQuest II’s community? Daybreak is hoping so, as the studio is bringing back the Nagafen server on February 5th to focus on player vs. player combat. The free-for-all, factionless, and free-trade PvP server is building upon lessons learned from Daybreak’s Deathtoll server. It’ll be a progression server of sorts, offering three-month “seasons” that start with the base game and go up through the first couple of expansions. Daybreak is making things more interesting by allowing players to earn unique titles and special armor and adding in-game scoreboards. Daybreak said that players will earn the most XP by downing other gamers rather than mobs. “We are rebalancing early game itemization and implementing custom rulesets that will allow for tailored itemization on unique servers,” Daybreak said. “This means we can tune the content to more closely resemble original PvE and PvP combat. We are … [Read more...] about EverQuest II rejuvenates PvP with a new seasonal server
It’s time to head into the Battle of Dazar’alor in World of Warcraft, so long as you’ve got a regular group to head into a normal raid. (You’ll have to wait for LFR and Mythic, as usual.) The raid is out today, along with the general upgrade to season 2 for all of the game’s gearing. Bigger numbers on world quest items, bigger numbers on Warfront items, bigger numbers on Mythic+ rewards. Bigger everything! If your mind is still calibrated to Legion-era item level numbers it probably doesn’t look all that much larger, but we assure you that it is. The second season also marks the start of Azerite Knowledge increasing on a steady scale through February and March, along with a higher maximum possible item level of 425. Enemies in the Darkshore Warfront have also been upgraded concurrently to the item level bump, so they’ll hit harder while rewarding better gear. Check out the full rundown for details of the exact item upgrades and get … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft patches in its new raid and its new season of items for Tides of Vengeance

The preliminaries have ended, and with that contest season 8 of the Feast has come to a close. The next round for would-be champions is the semifinals, with the North American finals taking place at this year’s Fan Festival. Those who didn’t qualify or didn’t wish to in the first place can still find something new to fight over, though, with season 9 starting now and running until the game’s next major patch. There’s also new armor available to players who rank highly, so if you’d avoided striving before because you disliked the old armor or already had it, you can get new rewards now! Play LOTRO for freeLet us travel back to 2009, when Lord of the Rings Online released its second expansion pack, Siege of Mirkwood. This pint-sized expansion seemed underwhelming with its options (although it did give us one of my favorite zones in the game), especially after the grandeur that was Moria. However, Mirkwood did factor in a new feature that made a pretty big splash with players: skirmishes. Skirmishes were a new type of instanced content that could be scaled in both difficulty and group size, both of which felt revolutionary at the time. They threw players into either an offensive or defensive quest, challenging the group to conquer piles of foes and continue to press onward by claiming flags, defending areas, and defeating optional side objectives. To make matters even more interesting, players got to bring along a soldier companion to assist, and this soldier could be modified and trained to become more effective. People, by and large, really liked this system, but for … [Read more...] about LOTRO Legendarium: Are the new seasonal instances a win or a whimper?
