The riches of the eastern kingdom of Turan have arrived in Conan Exiles, Funcom’s open world survival game set in the brutal world of Conan the Barbarian. Available now on PC and PlayStation 4, and releasing soon on Xbox One, the new DLC introduces the opulent gilded palaces of Turanian culture to the savage Exiled Lands. In addition to more building styles, players will also find new armors and weapons, new warpaints, new placeables such as glittering statues and standing lamps, and two new pack animal pets: the richly adorned caravan Rhino and elephant. The elephants are on parade in the new Conan Exiles DLC Treasures of Turan. Sure, it’s more than just elephants, but “elephants, rhinoceroses, and Turans on parade” isn’t as much fun to say. However, the new DLC from Funcom is available today for PC and PlayStation 4. Xbox One people, your time is “coming soon” according to the press release. Along with the launch of Treasures of Turan, Funcom also announced the release of a two-year season pass. The pass will give you access to Treasures of Turan and the next three DLC packs coming later this year: Riders of Hyboria, Blood and Sand, and Mysteries of Acheron. According to Funcom, buying the season pass will save you 25% over buying the packs as they release. Between the waves of MOBA and battle royale phenomenons, I’ve noticed an alternative monetization model that’s apparently proven quite successful in these games. Seasonal passes are popping up everywhere in games like SMITE and Fortnite, and I have to imagine that they’re pretty lucrative money-makers for studios. The basic idea behind seasonal passes is to sell players a package that contains many rewards that must be unlocked with in-game activities before a certain time frame comes to an end. The sheer number of rewards makes these passes quite alluring, and the excitement of the next season keeps players coming back for more. My question today is whether or not seasonal passes could work in MMORPGs. Could developers create packs like this and develop enough optional achievements as requirements to unlock rewards?
