Back in 2015, I made a few predictions about MMORPGs that I thought had a chance – even if only a slim one – of going free-to-play. Of the six games we addressed, two of them have gone full or at least semi-F2P; Eve Online has a F2P option, while The Secret World dove headlong into F2P in 2017.The other four games on our list – Elite: Dangerous, The Elder Scrolls Online, Final Fantasy XIV, and World of Warcraft – haven’t made any significant changes to their payment models over the past four years, but those aren’t too surprising. I gave them all low-ish chances of doing it, and they didn’t do it. That means I was correct, right? Right? That said, I was a little prescient in one of my side comments: Also, I decided not to include games that haven’t yet launched, like Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade or Star Citizen. Maybe next year? Eternal Crusade is indeed free-to-play now, while Star Citizen launched in 2016 … I mean, 2017 … [Read more...] about What Will Go F2P Next? We Offer Up 6 Predictions

Activision-Blizzard had a rough week of its own making, as it announced record-high revenue for the year and in the same moment began laying off around 800 employees. Outrage across the gaming industry was fierce enough to provoke the anger of not just the video game unionization group but the AFL-CIO too, the former of which demanded Bobby Kotick’s resignation and the latter of which urged game developers to unionize. Piggybacking on the bad news, or maybe hiding in its shadow, was Daybreak, which delayed the launch of PlanetSide Arena again, this time into summer 2019, and it topped that off by refunding everyone who’d preordered the game. At least somebody’s having a good week. That somebody is EA, thanks almost entirely to Apex Legends, though Anthem’s been no slouch either. In more meta news, we introduced another new column in time for our birthday. Read on to catch up with the very best of this week’s MMO news and opinions today as every Sunday … [Read more...] about MMO Week in Review: The week when EA looked like the good guy
I met up with my best friend last night, because for the last few months she’s been letting me use her basement to store some of my old junk — DVDs, CDs, boxes of books and comics and the like — and I was finally picking it all up. We don’t get to see each other all that often now, with me living downtown and her up in the suburbs, but there’s a reason why out of all my girl friends she’s my best friend, and why we stayed close even after so many years. She’s into a lot of geeky things just like me, and it was fun being able to catch up and talk about our interests. This made me realize, that even though my site is called “MMO Gamer Chick”, most of the time I don’t actually feel like I’m blogging from a “girl’s point of view”. I mean, I’m female, but that fact has little to nothing to do with how I experience games, and for the most part I think my posts have been pretty gender-neutral (all right, … [Read more...] about Girl Gamer Thoughts: Why Do I Feel Like A Quirk In Real Life?

Like many, he started with a domain name, web hosting, and every essential thing to build a new WordPress blog. But he was unable to get going or make money. It appears like he didn’t focus much on blog marketing and eventually had to shut down his blog. I’m not disclosing the email here as it was not formatted properly. Anyway, basically it’s yet another “I have started a blog but I’m not making money” kind of email that I see more often. Whenever I get such emails, I get reminded of two things: First, a good percentage of such beginners started a blog only to make money or at least hoping that they WILL make money (hopefully from the first month/year itself). Secondly, there are a gazillion “How To Start A Blog In 5–15 Minutes” kind of tutorials on the blogosphere with many of them being written by the so-called “award-winning” bloggers. It’s supposed to be a good thing, right? Well, yes it is — but only … [Read more...] about You Can’t START A Blog In 10 Minutes. Period.
