As much as I enjoy the new guard of MMORPGs, with their quick-hit content and action combat models, I’m also not completely ignorant to some of the ways it used to be. I cut my teeth on this genre in EverQuest Online Adventures. Most of my deeper love of the genre was born from years in Final Fantasy XI. And, yes, while I also logged some time in World of Warcraft, my first “real” themepark MMO was City of Heroes. That said, I never really got in to the whole sandbox thing. I completely missed the Star Wars Galaxies boat and have only recently decided to explore this kind of MMORPG thanks to this column. So just where does Legends of Aria fit in to this exploration of mine? Definitely in the school of hard knocks category, but without really feeling extremely frustrating. In fact, the more I think on my time in this game, the more I wonder whether I just did it all completely wrong. Or maybe this game illustrated the threshold for how much of the olden ways … [Read more...] about Choose My Adventure: What Legends of Aria taught me about sandbox MMORPGs
Whats scarlet fever symptoms
This summer is — you have no idea — crazy busy for me. More so than any other summer I’ve experienced up to this point in my life, and it’s probably not going to slow down for a while. So while I have no time or energy to devote to running any sort of community event, it’s very gratifying to see Belghast crank up Blaugust once more. This “festival of blogging” that starts up in August is a way to encourage, promote, and mentor gaming and MMO bloggers — especially new or lapsed ones that need some encouragement in getting into the groove of (semi-)regular blogging. According to Belghast, “What I propose is a month of mildly structured posting and developing a strong mentorship community among those of us who are still out there doing it on a regular basis. Lets help grow that next generation of bloggers and help them get started in a journey that honestly has meant more to me than I can adequately put into words.” There … [Read more...] about Join the MMO blogging revolution! Every once in a while here at MMO Fallout I put out a community warning for specific games. Today I would like to put out a warning for gamers thinking about getting into the free to play MMO Scarlet Blade, or for those who have already started playing and are thinking about investing some cash. Word has come down to MMO Fallout via the online grapevine that Scarlet Blade characters are being randomly deleted, along with all of their items (including cash shop goods). Judging from forum posts, this may be a database bug that already existed in the Eastern version of Scarlet Blade and was brought over when the game was translated for the West. An Aeria Games GM commented on the bug: I know that this is a very concerning issue. Please know that we are working with the developers to solve this issue as quickly as we possibly can. We may ask you for what seems to strange information, or to create a new character with the same name. This will help the developers to identify and fix the … [Read more...] about Warning: Scarlet Blade Randomly Deletes Characters

I have seen the question “What happened to Lion’s Arch” asked frequently in Lion’s Arch map chat in the last few weeks. I will gladly give you an answer here: Scarlet happened. But as I was thinking about how to explain the happenings in as few words as possible (the chat in Guild Wars 2 does not really allow for lengthy replies), I realized that since launch, a lot more has happened to Lion’s Arch. Usually nothing this big, but still big enough to show you here. So before we get to the most recent “happening” (also known as the destruction of Lion’s Arch), let me take you back in time. A word of warning, this post will be picture-heavy and you may have to scroll quite a bit. ;) Guild Wars 2 launched in August 2012, but before that, players who had pre-purchased the game got to participate in the so-called “BWEs” (beta weekend events). During one BWE in April 2012, I went through Lion’s Arch to take the first screenshot … [Read more...] about Lion’s Arch: A look at what’s happened to the city
