From today through Friday, various World of Warcraft art teams will be showcasing their work, each day focused on a different team. The new day's contents will be shown at 10:00 am Pacific / 1:00 pm Eastern each day. The schedule is as follows: We’re very proud to have just released our latest expansion, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. The conflict between the Horde and Alliance has been brewing for a long time now, and with the release of this content we see the story of our beloved factions hit an all-time high. As always, the World of Warcraft art team wanted to ensure that the visuals we created for this expansion matched the epic storytelling that went into crafting this experience. The World of Warcraft Diary project by former Blizzard developer John Staats has turned to KickStarter. Staats is WoW's first 3D level designer and his book will touch on the design of the game from the ground up. The project sought $10,000 but is already nearing $30,000 with about four weeks to go. Supporter levels begin at $5 and run all the way to $300, each with a variety of digital and physical perks. My book, The World of Warcraft Diary, offers a rare, unfiltered, comprehensive look at game development. Licensed by Blizzard Entertainment, it contains over 130 behind-the-scenes images (many of which have never been seen before). Every image is captioned and dated within the project's timeline. Although the book has been licensed by Blizzard, I didn’t write it like the average promotional … [Read more...] about The World of Warcraft Diary Project Turns to Kickstarter & It’s Already Funded!
Let me tell you a bit about me and how I play MMORPGs. Between two jobs and a family, my gaming time is relegated to the deep evening hours where peace descends upon our household. If it’s a good night, I can get in two full hours of adventuring through virtual worlds before I grow too tired to continue. Some nights it’s less. That’s me, the fluffy casual, and while plenty of folks have devoured vast swaths of World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth this week (including our own excellent Eliot), I’ve been rotating through my roster of characters and experiencing this engaging expansion at my own tempered pace. Does that mean that I lack a perspective or … [Read more...] about A fluffy casual’s starting perspective on World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth
World of Warcraft remains the king, long live the king. WoW is arguably the most popular and genre defining MMORPG of our time. At its height, the game boasted 12 million active subscribing players, and paved the way for all future games in the genre to draw inspiration from, be it game mechanics or world design. While the game no longer boasts that amount of subs, WoW has no plans on dropping its subscription model for buy-to-play or free to play, which many of its competitors have done to stay relevant. Here are the top 5 recent MMO’s or “WoW Killers” that took a shot at dethroning the greatest MMO of them all. Wildstar In 2014, all the hype in the MMORPG universe centered on the launch of Wildstar, a sci-fi fantasy MMO that was dubbed the quintessential WoW killer which will eventually set the new high standard in the genre. Developed by former World of Warcraft developers, the game set out to overthrow WoW, and features a fresh approach to combat and with its … [Read more...] about 5 Modern MMORPGs That Couldn’t Challenge World of Warcraft
There’s no shortage of World of Warcraft news as Battle for Azeroth looms next week, so let’s hop to it! Players should steel themselves for another round of class tuning changes, which are arriving today and will most notably impact Druids and Priests. Blizzard continued to stoke the fires of Horde vs. Alliance conflict with the release of two free e-stories that look at the different sides of this conflict. Of course, some players are still coping with the huge lost of Teldrassil from last week, using art as a coping mechanism to express their sorrow. The studio also posted a zone overview of Vol’dun, a Horde-side region full of sand, salt flats, and rocky terrain. There are a lot of secrets to be uncovered here, and players will also bump into the fox-like Vulpera and the snake-like Sethrak. Blizzard recently teamed up with prominent WoW YouTuber Bellular to produce a series of new and returning player guides for the game: Source: Patch notes, Twitter, Wowhead, … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft: Free stories, class tuning, expansion prep guides, and Vol’dun overview
