From today through Friday, various World of Warcraft art teams will be showcasing their work, each day focused on a different team. The new day's contents will be shown at 10:00 am Pacific / 1:00 pm Eastern each day. The schedule is as follows: We’re very proud to have just released our latest expansion, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. The conflict between the Horde and Alliance has been brewing for a long time now, and with the release of this content we see the story of our beloved factions hit an all-time high. As always, the World of Warcraft art team wanted to ensure that the visuals we created for this expansion matched the epic storytelling that went into crafting this experience. And while we hope you can see that attention crammed into every corner of the two new continents we’ve created, we don’t often get to show off this work at its original resolution. This game is the product of a whole team of insanely talented craftspeople and we’re … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft Art Teams to Showcase Their Work All Week at ArtStation

World of Warcraft remains the king, long live the king. WoW is arguably the most popular and genre defining MMORPG of our time. At its height, the game boasted 12 million active subscribing players, and paved the way for all future games in the genre to draw inspiration from, be it game mechanics or world design. While the game no longer boasts that amount of subs, WoW has no plans on dropping its subscription model for buy-to-play or free to play, which many of its competitors have done to stay relevant. Here are the top 5 recent MMO’s or “WoW Killers” that took a shot at dethroning the greatest MMO of them all. Wildstar In 2014, all the hype in the MMORPG universe centered on the launch of Wildstar, a sci-fi fantasy MMO that was dubbed the quintessential WoW killer which will eventually set the new high standard in the genre. Developed by former World of Warcraft developers, the game set out to overthrow WoW, and features a fresh approach to combat and with its … [Read more...] about 5 Modern MMORPGs That Couldn’t Challenge World of Warcraft
The World of Warcraft Diary project by former Blizzard developer John Staats has turned to KickStarter. Staats is WoW's first 3D level designer and his book will touch on the design of the game from the ground up. The project sought $10,000 but is already nearing $30,000 with about four weeks to go. Supporter levels begin at $5 and run all the way to $300, each with a variety of digital and physical perks. My book, The World of Warcraft Diary, offers a rare, unfiltered, comprehensive look at game development. I start at WoW’s humble beginnings, and give a fly-on-the-wall access to the dev team’s conversations, debates, failed experiments, and internal pressures. Licensed by Blizzard Entertainment, it contains over 130 behind-the-scenes images (many of which have never been seen before). Every image is captioned and dated within the project's timeline. Although the book has been licensed by Blizzard, I didn’t write it like the average promotional … [Read more...] about The World of Warcraft Diary Project Turns to Kickstarter & It’s Already Funded!
There’s so much on the horizon for World of Warcraft players it’s almost daunting. With the 8.1 Tides of Vengance set to go live December 11-13 it’s time to start looking ahead to what’s next for WoW. After the What’s Next in World of Warcraft panel I had the opportunity to chat with Jimmy Lo, Visual Design Producer, and Ray Cobo, Lead Producer Art & Design, about some of the things we have to look forward to after 8.1. advertisement One of the things I am most excited about in 8.1.5 is we’ll finally get Kul’Tirans and Zandalari Trolls because I have been excited about both races ever since they were announced, and we realized they could be druids. However, one of my guildmates quickly pointed out something I hadn’t realized when I watched the panel. Kul’tirans can’t be mages. This seems like such a weird choice because Jaina exists and at this point she’s one of the strongest mages we know about. So, … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft BlizzCon Interview
Do you believe that time travel is possible? It most certain is in the realm of fantasy virtual worlds. Legacy servers from many early MMORPGs are popping up all over the world. Recently, I had the privilege to take a time machine and travel back to Azeroth exactly the way it was back in November of 2004 on the Elysium vanilla WoW server. Since then I have been enchanted and captivated yet again by the enthralling World of Warcraft MMORPG. This was all made possible by the hard work and dedication of the Elysium vanilla WoW team. Why are legacy servers so popular? It’s very simple. After years of bad design decisions made more out of concern for growing the demographic to increase profits than for the good of the game, the current version of World of Warcraft comes off as a pitiful shadow of its former self. Like a cheap knockoff of a Rolex watch sold by a street vendor, the WoW of today is WoW in name only. Over the years, WoW has been continually dumbed down and degraded … [Read more...] about The Majesty of Elysium’s Vanilla World of Warcraft
