It was just a couple of days ago when Bree was sharing that I felt like Wrath of the Lich King was the best World of Warcraft has ever been. But was it actually the best, or is that a matter of memory tilting it to be the best? I mean, that game was released a decade ago when I was still living in a house without air conditioning. I’ve moved twice since then, lots of new games have come out, we finally got a decent Mega Man game. There have been changes. Of course, at a glance I’m not inclined to change that particular viewpoint… but there are people who have argued that Legion is, in fact, the best expansion in the game’s history. And one of the benefits of this particular format is that I go in without a clear picture ahead of time; it’s all about putting together totals based on the criteria laid out. So let’s actually put these two expansions head-to-head. Wrath of the Lich King vs. Legion: Two expansions enter, one leaves as the best expansion … [Read more...] about Epic MMO Battles of History: World of Warcraft’s Wrath of the Lich King vs. Legion

My Thoughts on Tom Chilton Leaving the World of Warcraft Dev Team
This week Tom Chilton revealed that he is leaving the Blizzard World of Warcraft dev team. Apparently he is moving to another dev team within Blizzard and working on an unannounced project. If you love MMORPGs and WoW his departure is cause for celebration. As Game Director for WoW since the poorly received Cataclysm expansion, he has presided over the decline of this once great MMORPG which once boasted 12.5 million world wide subscribers in it’s heyday after the release of their Wrath of the Lich King, to 5.5 million subscribers well after the release of Warlords of Dreanor. With such an abysmal track record that undeniably lost millions of dollars for Blizzard, he should have been fired or transferred long ago. Many WoW fans will remember his flippant answers and smug smirks during his many BlizzCon appearances. After years of observation, I have come to believe that Tom never understood nor cared about the deeper aspects of fantasy virtual worlds. He had no real … [Read more...] about My Thoughts on Tom Chilton Leaving the World of Warcraft Dev Team

World of Warcraft is getting its newest expansion, Battle for Azeroth, on August 13th. We rounded up the five most prominent features and changes coming to World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. Allied races Possibly the most requested feature ever in WoW. Allied races are a form of sub races coming to BFA. Traditionally Blizzard has added between 0-2 new races with each expansion. Just this week, we’ve gotten news that BFA is now the fastest selling WoW expansion ever, with over 3.4 million units sold within the first 24 hours. We’ve gotten some good data from the good folks at Statista and are sharing the findings below. #1 Battle for Azeroth (3.4m units sold) In case you missed it, yes Battle for Azeroth is a hit. The latest expansion which went live August 14 brought players to two new continents in Kul Tiras and Zandalar. What World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth Needs to Succeed
World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth is struggling after stellar sales and glowing early reports about the story and the beauty of the expansion design. However, success for an expansion means more than the number of "day one" sales and more than the first two weeks of excitement over new content. Success is measured in the longevity of the expansion and in how players remain involved and interested over the long haul. So, what does BfA need to become a success? We have a few ideas. advertisement World of Warcraft has grown by seven expansions since it launched, each having met with varying degrees of success. 2014’s Warlords of Draenor has, at least up to now, been considered “the worst” of the lot. The Warlords expansion was roundly castigated for long droughts between content updates, something that was corrected in Legion. Battle for Azeroth has not been around quite long enough to call it “best or worst”, but it’s off to a rocky … [Read more...] about What World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth Needs to Succeed
