Travel back with us to April 2005, when an unknown and unproven studio known as ArenaNet decided to make a play at its own gaming in the then-blooming MMORPG genre. Despite World of Warcraft seizing headlines left and right at that point, Guild Wars came upon the scene and carved out its own sizable following with its (then-rare) buy-to-play model, collectable skills, and gorgeous artwork. It went on to sell well over six million copies over the next five years, putting it among the best-selling PC titles of all time. This month marks Guild Wars’ 13th anniversary, and while the title has existed in maintenance mode for some time now, players can still go back to an older era of Tyria where jumping was forbidden and there was only one playable race. The anniversary celebration is currently up and running, with all sorts of fun on the Shing Jea Boardwalk. Why not head back and get your rollerbeetles on or play a match or two of dodgeball? Last year, to celebrate the game’s … [Read more...] about Guild Wars blows out 13 candles on its birthday cake – were you there for its first?

It’s time for another “Ask Nerdy Bookahs”. We have looked at the questions in the search terms that led people to our blog for which we know we do not have fitting entries and we’re trying to answer those questions now. Do I need to have played Guild Wars to play Guild Wars 2? Technically, no. There is nothing holding you back from purchasing Guild Wars 2 and playing it if you don’t own Guild Wars 1. But I assume that this question is not about the technical aspect of setting up an account, entering game codes, etc. but rather about the lore behind it. Guild Wars 2 is based on an established lore, it has a history of more than 250 years (Guild Wars 1 takes place 250 years before Guild Wars 2). There are two (soon three, I assume) novels connecting the story of Guild Wars 1 with Guild Wars 2 (“Ghosts of Ascalon” and “Edge of Destiny”). At the end of Guild Wars 1, there were hints pointing towards the happenings of Guild Wars 2 … [Read more...] about Ask Nerdy Bookahs
While I may play World of Warcraft off and on, one constant is my interest in the lore behind the game, an interest that extends to pretty much all MMOs I play, in fact. I’m always devouring every piece of lore and background information I can find, even if that means putting up with some not-so-well-written novels every once in a while. I’ve long discovered that looking for quality writing in most video game tie-in books is a lost cause. Admittedly, I didn’t think Jaina Proudmoore: Tides of War was going to pose much of problem on that front, because I’m generally well-disposed towards author Christie Golden’s works. The book’s eponymous heroine is also a major WoW character that I’ve always liked and followed with interest. Indeed, if you’ve kept track with WoW lore and characters as closely as I have in recent years, I think some of the events in ToW will impact you in more profound ways than if you hadn’t. The story reaches back … [Read more...] about Read Lately: Jaina Proudmoore – Tides Of War
I had every intent of doing some World of Warcraft faction farming last night, but I ultimately did not really follow up on those plans. When I got home we wound up running a couple of errands and going out to eat, and by the time we made it home I largely planted myself on the sofa and roamed around Project Gorgon some more. Yesterday I looked like I was wearing some urine soaked bandages… and today I am essentially the stuff of nightmare as some sort of living web creature. The armor designs in this game are “interesting” but I have seen some completely reasonable options that give me hope that maybe just maybe I won’t look like an experiment for the entire time playing. A couple of things have transpired since last playing. Firstly I realized that psychology is a combat skill, and apparently pairs extremely nicely with swords… also freeing up my second hand for a shield while using it instead of needing to hold a … [Read more...] about Unintentional Spiderman
This is the full version of entries that have been published in the last week! I just thought it might be nicer to have everything in one huge entry instead of in separate ones (either way: You can find all entries in the category labelled “rift vs. lotro vs. wow” on the right). The topic I wrote some time ago about “Rift vs. LotRO” is still getting readers almost every day. Unfortunately, it is probably not the kind of topic they were looking for. So, since I’ve played both games (at least for a little while), I thought I would make an elaborate posting about those games. I’m also going to throw in World of Warcraft because, apart from playing it as well, the big majority of MMO gamers have played the game or know something about the game, at least. :) (After starting to write this, I realised how long this entry would be in the end and decided to split it into different topics to be posted separately. So expect a posting every day for the next few … [Read more...] about Rift vs. LotRO vs. World of Warcraft – a closer look at all three MMOs (all entries in one)
