Yesterday I talked about a few ARPGs I had been playing as an attempt to get the Diablo Immortal thing out of my system. Since then a handful of you have suggested other games to me, and I thought I would take a moment this morning to talk about a few competitors for the “next great ARPG” crown that I have spent some time playing. This has always been a genre that appealed to me, so as something new comes down the pipe I tend to check it out at least for a bit. These projects seem especially popular on Kickstarter because everyone seems to have loved Diablo 2 and wants to build a better version of it. That can be a positive or a negative, especially considering post Diablo 3 I found it almost impossible to go back and play Diablo 2 again. Victor Vran We will start off with the weirdest entry in the list first, largely because it does a lot of things… not like other games. First off this is primarily a WASD game with your primary … [Read more...] about More ARPGs

In a conversation about the recent Starflight 3 Fig campaign – which you won’t see covered here since it’s not multiplayer, but let me throw in an OMG and a squeeee right now anyway – a guildie of mine wondered aloud whether anyone really cares about art books in these campaigns. I’m with him; art books aren’t my thing. I probably wouldn’t pay for soundtracks either since YouTube is awash in free video game music. On the other hand, I am a sucker for maps. I still have my original Ultima Online cloth map, for example, as well as my City of Heroes maps, the latter of which I used to hang on my walls because I never could freaking remember which line went where. This game doesn’t even exist formally anymore, but I still have my maps! I thought it would be a fun question to post to the team and the readers for this week’s Massively Overthinking: What’s your favorite MMORPG swag of all time? What was the game? Is it from a … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: What’s your favorite MMORPG swag of all time?
Conference Prep Work As I mentioned yesterday morning my day was filled with helping my wife prepare for the conference this week. One of the goofy things about a school system is that you cannot take for granted any two rooms being configured the same way. I have no doubt that at one point or another they were probably all working exactly the same. However a series of teachers with their own way of doing things has meant that no two projector systems were set up quite the same. So over the course of the morning we went from room to room turning everything on, and making notes as to how exactly you got sound from the system, and video to the projector. To add a monkey wrench in the works, some of the rooms had what is called an Elmo, which I guess is some sort of modern age version of the overhead projector. Some of the systems routed through this device, others you simply had to switch the VGA port over to if it you wanted to use it. In each room I … [Read more...] about Frog Fractions
Last night was the night we go out and do things in Final Fantasy XIV, but for a period of time before and after the events I got in some Mass Effect Andromeda. There are still aspects of the game that I really do love, and aspects that I am really struggling to cope with. I am trying really hard to come up with a headcanon that the 600 year cryo sleep has given pretty much everyone partial facial paralysis… because wow… just wow. It is fine more or less when dealing with the normal ins and outs of missions… but when you take a romantic option you tread on some seriously painful uncanny valley territory. I am hoping we get later patches that adjust this, because it is mostly a distraction from what is otherwise a pretty solid game. I am having some weirdness with Ryder as well because I keep forgetting he isn’t Shepard. I mean I am playing a Mass Effect game and dealing with weird elder god robotic space magic … [Read more...] about Third Party Screenshot Tools
