Hear that rumble off in the distance? It’s WoW Classic, and it’s only two weeks out now, as all the infodumps and server plans and promos and new models and character boosts and server types indicate. We got Blizzard’s quarterly financials this week too, and no surprise – WoW subs are up in anticipation. We’re thinking it’ll be awfully interesting if WoW Classic prods the rest of the genre to turn another page the way the original game did. Meanwhile, No Man’s Sky is prepping its next big thing, DCUO hit the Switch, Legends of Aria hit Steam early access, City of Heroes’ rogue servers took steps toward legitimacy, video games were once again unjustly blamed for spurring on violence, and the ESA’s backtrack on lockboxes feels like a bit of a hollow victory. Wow 14th anniversary event
Let’s just stipulate right here that Final Fantasy XIV knows how to freaking throw down a fan festival. Patch info, expansion info, juicy teases, no mobile junk, and no condescension. Oh yeah, and the devs are also the band. If you’ve missed Eliot’s in-person coverage of the Vegas event, you’ve missed out indeed. Of course, other stuff also happened this week; for example, we saw big content drops for Black Desert, EverQuest II, Secret World Legends, ArcheAge, and TERA, plus Hellgate is back and Fallout 76 officially opened its doors. And we got a look at Path of Exile’s next big thing, and we’ll have more info from the Hi-Rez Expo this week too. It might be hard to believe, but this year marks the 14th anniversary since Blizzard changed the landscape of the MMO genre with the release of World of Warcraft back in November of 2004. As the saying goes, time flies when you’re constantly saving the world from the threat of complete annihilation. Or something like that, anyway. To celebrate the game’s 14th anniversary, Blizzard is putting on an event in which players can complete new daily quests, go toe-to-toe with iconic enemies from the game’s history, and get their hands on some shiny, celebratory rewards. To kick things off, all players who log into the game between now and November 30th will be granted a special Anniversary Gift Package containing 200 Timewarped Badges, an experience-buff item, and a letter from the Timewalkers that begins a special anniversary quest. On top of that, players will find two new daily quests from Historian Llore and Historian Ju’pa, from which they can earn more Timewarped … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft celebrates its 14th anniversary with a historic event
Doesn’t it seem as if BlizzCon was weeks ago? Nope, just one week. So over the last seven days, the gaming community has been mulling over the convention and where it went wrong. Probably not from their phones. Investors didn’t seem too pleased with the Diablo Immortal reaction or the company’s third quarter financials either. Meanwhile, MMORPG Lord of the Rings Online successfully launched its first-ever progression server, seeing so much demand on day one that Standing Stone rolled out a second.
